Le second volume de cette collection Car Racing, consacré cette fois à l’année 1966, plonge à nouveau au cœur de l’âge d’or du sport automobile. 1966, c’est la poursuite de l’ascension du nouveau héros français, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, face au jeune rookie, Jackie Ickx, et à un autre garçon qui n’a pas froid aux yeux : Henri Pescarolo. Les légendes du sport automobile français sont déjà là.
Les étrangers ne sont pas en reste et s’appellent Jack Brabham, Jochen Rindt, Graham Hill, ou Bruce McLaren… excusez du peu. Les rois de la route attirent eux aussi les foules au bord des cols et des chemins. Ils ont pour noms Timo Makinen, Rauno Aaltonen, Pauli Toivonen, Tony Fall, Gilbert Staepelaere ou Jean Rolland.
Du côté des autos, Ford GT 40, Ferrari ou Alpine, BRM, Lotus, Mini Cooper … au panthéon du design et du tonnerre mécanique, rivalisent d’audace pour s’emparer des premières places, dans les rallyes comme dans les épreuves d’endurance type Le Mans. En 1966, d’ailleurs, l’un des auteurs de ce livre, Johnny Rives, pilote la n° 53 dans la ligne droite des Hunaudières. Sacrés souvenirs.
Cette année-là voit également notre idole nationale, Johnny Halliday, piloter sa propre voiture sur le Rallye de Monte-Carlo demeuré célèbre pour ses pistes enneigées et ses célébrités embarquées.
La même année qu’Henri Ford II se rend dans la Sarthe, il est aussi question de Ford, mais cette fois d’une Mustang, mise en image par un certain Claude Lellouch entre Monte-Carlo et Deauville dans Un Homme et une Femme. Un autre film, Grand Prix, de John Frankenheimer avec Yves Montand fascine aussi le public.
Pilotes de légendes, constructeurs incontournables, clichés des plus grandes courses mythiques au monde… ce livre unique permettra aux passionnés de sports mécaniques mais également aux amateurs de photographie de replonger au cœur des évènements.
L’agence de photos DPPI est née de la passion d’une poignée d’hommes pour la photographie et l’automobile, de préférence sportive. DPPI s’est attachée dès lors à faire partager au plus grand nombre le quotidien des pilotes et des équipes de course, depuis les routes ou les circuits.
Les pilotes, que ce soit au Mans, dans les courses de côte ou sur les premiers circuits de ce qui n’est pas encore le grand barnum de la Formule 1, sont accessibles, accueillants. Ils sourient aux amateurs et aux medias qui ne sont pas encore légion à se presser au bord des pistes ou des circuits.
La mise en valeur du fonds d’archives de l’agence DPPI à travers les centaines de clichés édités et commentés dans ce livre par les photographes et les acteurs de l’époque eux-mêmes font pénétrer un univers riche d’aventures humaines extraordinaires autour de machines d’exception.
L’accès jusqu’à présent limité aux médias et aux professionnels – la plupart de ces photos de presse n’ayant même jamais été publiées – s’ouvre pour la première fois au grand public grâce à cet ouvrage proposé à un prix très compétitif, compte tenu de sa qualité et de sa pagination.
Johnny Rives est depuis son entrée à L'Equipe en 1960 le meilleur spécialiste du sport automobile. Ancien commentateur des grands prix de F1 sur TF1, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages consacrés à sa passion pour la course et les voitures de sport. Il dresse quelques portraits émouvants des grands pilotes, en écho aux photographies de DPPI.
Ex-pilote, Manou Zurini est le plus ancien des photographes de course automobile, notamment au sein de l'agence DPPI. Incontournable sur les circuits depuis le début des années 60, beaucoup de ses clichés ont fait le tour du monde. Aujourd'hui retiré des circuits, il est un artiste sculpteur de renommée internationale et livre ici dans des légendes au cordeau, toute sa connaissance du sport automobile.

Since joining L'Equipe in 1960, Johnny Rives has been the best specialist of motorsports. A former commentator of the F1 Grand Prix on TF1, he has published numerous books devoted to his passion for racing and sports cars. He draws up some moving portraits of great drivers to complement the DPPI photographs.
A former driver, Manou Zurini is the oldest of the motor racing photographers, namely within the DPPI agency. A fixture on the circuits since the beginning of the 60s, many of his shots have been published around the world. Now retired from the circuits, he is an internationally renowned sculptor and delivers all his knowledge of motorsports in the captions to the photographs in this book.
