Dans cette nouvelle publication iconoclaste, l\u2019\u00e9diteur a choisi d’emprunter aux codes du journalisme davantage qu\u2019\u00e0 ceux du critique d\u2019art. L\u2019ouvrage qui pr\u00e9sente des \u0153uvres pass\u00e9es, pr\u00e9sentes et (presque) futures d\u2019Err\u00f3 retra\u00e7ant 50 ans de cr\u00e9ation, est \u00e9galement proche de l\u2019esprit pop de l\u2019artiste, jusque dans sa forme. Originale, elle pr\u00e9sente une s\u00e9lection in\u00e9dite de ses peintures et collages.
\nCompl\u00e9tant l’entretien introductif exclusif qu\u2019Err\u00f3 nous a accord\u00e9, les citations qui jalonnent l’ouvrage r\u00e9v\u00e8lent l’acuit\u00e9 et la pertinence de sa r\u00e9flexion sur l’art en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral et sur le sien en particulier. Il n’a jamais peint que le pr\u00e9sent. Captiv\u00e9 par le monde qui l’entoure, il y puise son inspiration. Si la peinture classique n’a jamais cess\u00e9 de le nourrir et de le fasciner par sa composition, il aime tout autant la libert\u00e9, la couleur et la g\u00e9n\u00e9rosit\u00e9 du Street art.
\nRien ne t\u00e9moigne mieux de l\u2019importance d\u2019Err\u00f3, mais \u00e9galement de sa modestie que ce Panorama, inaugur\u00e9 par les derni\u00e8res \u0153uvres de 2014 pour remonter jusqu’\u00e0 celles des ann\u00e9es 60. Parce que face \u00e0 \u00ab l’incessant flot d’images et d’\u00e9v\u00e9nements \u00bb, Err\u00f3 jubile et manie les ciseaux et la colle. Avec avidit\u00e9, une inlassable curiosit\u00e9, il pioche dans la BD, autant que dans Picasso, les journaux et les revues, les mangas, autant que Mao. \u00ab Tout, absolument tout a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 photographi\u00e9, film\u00e9, dessin\u00e9, alors pourquoi vouloir cr\u00e9er encore de nouvelles images ? \u00bb a coutume de dire Erro, arguant que les \u00e9l\u00e9ments de ses collages sont, \u00ab la partie la plus excitante et la plus libre du travail \u00bb. Lui a travers\u00e9 les courants, les si\u00e8cles m\u00eame, et on red\u00e9couvre aujourd\u2019hui son apport majeur \u00e0 l\u2019art de notre temps.
\nErr\u00f3, en islandais, signifie “Maintenant, c’est calme”. L’artiste s’\u00e9tait invent\u00e9 ce pseudonyme en complicit\u00e9 avec son ami Jean-Jacques Lebel parce que l\u2019\u00e9tranget\u00e9 de ses pr\u00e9nom et nom d’\u00e9tat civil, – Gu\u00f0mundur Gu\u00f0mundsson-, risquait, en effet, de compliquer ses d\u00e9buts de carri\u00e8re en France, au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 50\u2026 Soixante ans apr\u00e8s, ce n’est cependant toujours pas calme, c’est le moins que l’on puisse dire. D\u2019exposition en r\u00e9trospective, il travaille sans rel\u00e2che.
\nConstruites de chocs visuels et m\u00ealant les temporalit\u00e9s et les espaces, les cr\u00e9ations d’Err\u00f3 sont virulentes, troublantes, mais \u00e9galement empreintes d’humour et de d\u00e9rision. \u00c9minemment critique, son \u0153uvre exhibe la guerre (de celle du Vietnam \u00e0 l’invasion am\u00e9ricaine en Irak), les pouvoirs totalitaires ou la pornographie de la pub et de la consommation de masse. Sujets qui font l\u2019objet de s\u00e9ries: cycles chinois, politiques, \u00e9rotiques. Les sciences fascinent \u00e9galement l’artiste, la BD, les jeux vid\u00e9os et les mangas aussi. Rien ne lui est indiff\u00e9rent. Avec lui, les cosmonautes c\u00f4toient des odalisques d’Ingres, Mao, Mickey. Les rapprochements iconoclastes se multiplient \u00e0 l’infini laissant toute libert\u00e9 au spectateur d’en interpr\u00e9ter \u00e0 sa guise la signification.
\n\u00ab La peinture, selon lui, est le laboratoire du possible : un lieu o\u00f9 l’on peut exp\u00e9rimenter, faire du vieux avec du neuf. Je peins parce que la peinture est la forme priv\u00e9e de l’utopie, le plaisir de contredire, le bonheur d’\u00eatre seul contre tous, la joie de provoquer\u00bb.<\/p>\n

In this new iconoclastic publication, the editor chose to borrow more from the codes of journalism than from those of art criticism. The book, that presents past, present and (almost) future works by Err\u00f3, retracing 50 years of creation, is also close to the pop spirit of the artist, even in its form. As an original object, it presents a new selection of his paintings and collages.<\/span>
\nComplementing the exclusive introductory interview that Err\u00f3 gave us, the quotations that intersperse the work reveal the sharpness and relevance of his reflection on art in general and on his own in particular. He has never painted anything but the present. Captivated by the world around him, he draws his inspiration from it. Although classical painting has never ceased to influence and fascinate him by its composition, he also loves the freedom, colour and generosity of Street art.<\/span>
\nThere is no better illustration of the importance of Err\u00f3, but also of his modesty, than this Panorama<\/em>, which begins with works from 2014 before going back to those from the 1960s. Because in the face of \u201cthe incessant flow of images and events,\u201d Err\u00f3 rejoices and wields scissors and glue. Eagerly, with a tireless curiosity, he draws from comics as much as from Picasso, from newspapers, magazines and manga as much as from Mao. \u201cEverything, absolutely everything, has already been photographed, filmed, and drawn, so why create new images?\u201d Err\u00f3 is in the habit of saying, arguing that the elements of his collages are \u201cthe most exciting and the most free part of the work.\u201d He has crossed the currents, even the centuries, and today we rediscover his major contribution to the art of our time.<\/span>
\nErr\u00f3, in Icelandic, means “Now it\u2019s quiet”. The artist invented this pseudonym together with his friend Jean-Jacques Lebel because the strangeness of his first name and surname – Gu\u00f0mundur Gu\u00f0mundsson \u2013 risked complicating his early career in France at the beginning of the 1950s. Sixty years later, it is still not quiet, to say the least. From exhibitions to retrospectives, the artist works tirelessly.<\/span>
\nConstructed by visual shocks and combining temporalities and spaces, Err\u00f3\u2019s creations are virulent, disturbing, but also filled with humour and derision.\u00a0Eminently critical, his work exhibits wars (from that of Vietnam to the American invasion in Iraq), totalitarian powers, and the pornography of advertising and mass consumption.\u00a0Topics that are treated serially: Chinese, political, or erotic cycles.\u00a0The artist is also fascinated by science, comics, video games and mangas.\u00a0Nothing is indifferent to him.\u00a0With him, cosmonauts rub shoulders with the odalisques of Ingres, Mao, Mickey.\u00a0Iconoclastic connections multiply endlessly, leaving the spectator free to interpret their meaning at will.<\/span>
